How much do I need to be earning to afford a car in Singapore?

Actually, not much at all! Even on a modest salary of $1,500 it is possible.

Do you really want to buy it? Not really. Here’s why.

Monthly installments for a car can be as low as $300. However, there are other miscellaneous costs involve in driving  the car.

Do remember to factor in the following:

  • The car (loan installments)
  • Road Tax
  • Insurance
  • Parking
  • ERP
  • Maintenance & Repairs
  • Radio licence  (removed since 2011)
  • Fines
  • and much more!

For a low-end Japanese car, typical usage in Singapore will probably cost you $1,500 a month. Tough.

COE prices are now above $50K for small cars and $70K for big cars. Top 5 makes sold in Singapore in the month of October 2011:

  • Mercedes Benz: 444
  • BMW: 395
  • Volkswagen: 278
  • Toyota: 257
  • Audi: 215

So earn less than $5K and want to drive? You’re gonna suffer.

Take a loan and go on holiday instead lah :)
